We show our love to those we care about by hugging and holding and stroking. We can be caring without speaking through touch. A touch can convey compassion, admiration, adoration..not merely just sexual interest. Touch sends a message of reassurance and support, intimacy (as a gentle stroking of the forearm, brush of the cheek), safety (as an arm around the shoulder) or relaxation (as a shoulder massage) among other feelings.
Touch is a powerful medium for communicating love and caring.
Touch reinforces and helps to establish the emotional and physical closeness, the bond we feel with one another. Holding hands, kissing, embracing, cuddling, snuggling, stroking, walking arm-in-arm, arms around each other's shoulders, arms around other's waists, are all ways of communicating emotional love to one's partner. All realtionships, be they a love realtionship or friendship are enhanced by gentle physical touch.
We have long known the emotional power that touch conveys. Studies have shown that babies who are held, hugged and kissed develop a healthier emotional life than those who are left for long periods of time without physical contact. Physical contact and reassurance make a stronger healthier relationship, not only with children, but also with adults. Touching lovingly is is reassuring, nurturing and strengthens our relationships and ourselves as persons. It also greatly can relieve stress, and improve our physical health.
Expressing Love through Touch
A touch may take time, or be short, similar to a whisper. A back rub takes time, but by placing your hand on your partner's shoulder as you pour a cup of coffee takes only a moment. Sitting close to each other on the couch as you watch television, requires no time, but may communicate your love loudly. Snuggling together sends messages of warmth and belonging, being loved and protected, giving security.
Touching your partner as you walk through the room where he/she is sitting takes only a moment, such as a gentle brush on a cheek, yet conveys affection, love and enouragement. Touching each other as you leave the house and when you return may be only a kiss or hug, but will speak volumes to your love, without saying a word.
Touch enhances a relationship.
A loving touch expresses love, warmth, caring. A soft physical touch can be a powerful language of love. No words are spoken, yet a communication of love is exchanged. Touch communicates silently from one to another: "I care about you" "I love you" "You are important to me" "I am here for you". Touch with your heart wide open.
Touch conveys so much using so little, and when combined with eye contact, a smile, a warm tone of voice, the impact is even greater, and has a magical quality all it's own. Even though that may not always be possible, sometimes it's simply the touch itself that has the magic.
By closing the space with your loved one, there is no room in that moment for disagreements or grudges--only acceptance, understanding, sympathy, love and caring.
